R/V Point Sur-Isotope Forms

Please follow instructions below & send appropriate completed form directly to:

Lamerdin@MLML.Calstate.Edu

Isotope users on the R/V Point Sur need to fill out San Jose State University’s “Ionization Radiation Authorization Permit”(valid for one year) in addition to the R/V Point Sur’s “Radioactive Materials Permit.”

Repeat users with a valid “Ionization Radiation Authorization Permit” need only fill out the R/V Point Sur’s “Radioactive Material Cruise Permit.”

Radioactive materials on board ships pose problems not found in shore laboratories.  Instead of a dedicated laboratory often used for no other purpose, radioactive materials at sea occupy laboratory spaces that will be used by other researchers.  Therefore, research vessel operators and scientists have a particular obligation to ensure the highest level of standards with regard to monitoring, clean-up, and record keeping of isotopes in these shared laboratory areas.  These precautions are necessary not only for the protection of personnel but also to ensure the integrity of measurements made by different investigators of environmental levels of natural or artificial radio nuclides.  In most cases, it is necessary for these programs to measure as close to zero values of radionuclides as possible.
