C. Shipboard technician(s) - Hours, Duties and responsibilities

Function as a liaison between the ship’s’ crew and the scientific party.   Ensure the quality of all shipboard data collected during a cruise and conduct periodic data backups.   Perform periodic checks of the data to ensure quality.   Safely operate all shared-use equipment on board.   Maintain, troubleshoot and attempt to repair all shared-use and user-supplied equipment as needed.   Train the scientific personnel in the safe handling of all over-the-side operations.   The ship’s technician will work up to 12 hours in a 24-hour period (if additional support is necessary, bunk-space for an additional marine technician will be required).   Watches will be either six hours on/six off or twelve hours straight.   If changes to these schedules are required, the Chief Scientist should contact the Sr. Marine Technician to discuss alternatives.   The ship’s Marine Technician is not part of the science party and should not be considered available to directly assist in the processing of data collected from user-supplied, shared-use equipment.   Data collected from the ship’s CTD system however, will be processed before being given to the Chief Scientist.   Questions or clarifications to this policy should be directed to the Sr. Marine Technician.
